Gestalt Therapy was developed by Fritz and Laura Perls in the 1940’s. It has been adopted from psychoanalysis and focuses on an experiential and humanistic approach. It works on the ‘here and now’ principle rather than the unconscious mind.

Gestalt Therapy and Gestalt Psychology

1 PDF

The main concepts of Gestalt psychology are: figure and background; the importance of interpreting the coherence or split of a figure in terms of the total context of the actual situation; the definite structured whole; the need to organize a meaningful whole and the natural tendency towards noting the simplicity of form; and the attempt to complete the unfinished situations themselves.

Fritz, while appealing to moralism talks about the setbacks of the generations to come. He says that we have become so phobic towards pain and suffering, or anything that is not fun or pleasant that we avoid it. We run away from any situation that may seem painful and try to take a shortcut by avoiding that route. This results in lack of growth as individuals. By lack of growth he means the readiness to encounter the difficulties.

He says that unlike depth psychology, we try to get hold of the obvious behaviours and situations that we find ourselves in, and to develop the Gestalt in these situations strictly on the I and Thou, Here and Now relationship. If the client recollects the past or escapes in the future, it is examined as the resistance in the ongoing reality. For instance, in Gloria’s case, in the beginning, she said about remembering when she was a little girl and how she’d be cornered when she was upset. To this, Fritz kept pushing her to respond to “Are you a little girl now?”

Self & it's Identification

The “self” is the system of contacts at any moment. As such, the self is flexibly various, for it varies with the dominant organic needs and the pressing environmental stimuli; it is the system of responses; it diminishes in sleep when there is less need to respond. The self is the contact-boundary at work; its activity is forming figures and

Some difference in General Therapeutic Attitude

The Hierarchy of Values

1 PDF

The evaluation given by self-regulation holds a privileged position in ethics because it leads to awareness and the most vital force. However, when the reality is pressing, specific values replace other values, providing a hierarchy of what does, in fact, marshal brightness and vigour in its execution.

Theories of Psychotherapy as Hierarchies of Value

Almost every theory of medicine, psychotherapy, or education is based on some conception of organismic-self-regulation and its corresponding hierarchy of values. The conception is the operation of what the scientist considers to be the chief dynamic factor in life and society.
